Fiona was born in Sligo, grew up in Ballina Co. Mayo and now lives in Kinvara, Co. Galway.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Fiona studied painting for 6 years in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology as a mature student and received an Academic Achievement Award in 2015.
"As a painter I am passionate about the physical act of paint application and the relationship between colours and gestural brush strokes often varying the application of thin and thick paint. My work is an exploration of contemporary landscape painting with the subject matter revolving around the figure or animal within a landscape and is mostly autobiographical.
These paintings are abstracted depictions spontaneously painted from memory and the imagination, inspired by my surroundings, childhood and nature. There is a theme of taking refuge in nature, escaping to the wild.
I allow the paint to dictate the beginning of each painting and use my imagination when it comes to the subject manner. There is an element of story telling within a lot of my work and at times there is a hint of drama."
